Nov-28th, 2008
Nov 4th 2008 was a historic day in the eyes of many as for the first time in the history of the United States of America an Afro American took the podium to address a large gathering as the 44th President-elect. It seemed that in that moment of time almost the whole world was celebrating along with the many in the States.
As far as the church was concerned the run-up to the polls left the present day church divided. While there were fervent prayers offered for a more righteous ruler (McCain) to take that place, many in the other camp were openly praying for Obama to take that place. As sad as it is, there were prophecies from both camps on who will become the President. Now as that phase is over and the dust seems to be settling down it is important we learn from some of these events as related to the church and be prepared for the future.
1) The church needs to find its proper place apart from the State first to influence it.
In observing many of the people listening to Obama’s speech it was more than obvious that he was their redemption or savior. Even though the church might not entirely lean toward that, it is clear from the recent events that we have an unhealthy inclination towards those in power.
In the New Testament times the rulers were thinking on how to change the Christians as they were influencing every avenue by simply displaying purity and God’s Love. Today ironically we the church are thinking on how to change our rulers as we feel they influence our society. A total contradiction to were the New Testament church was. In saying this I want to leave room for balanced thoughts on the matter.
However it is very important we get this straight because in looking at the recent events its seems like the coming of the Antichrist is not far away. The economic collapse, the trials that not only America but also the whole world has faced as a result have opened it up in looking for redemption in something or somebody. It was evident by the way Obama was received by the people. Although I believe Obama is not the Anti Christ as some say he is, if we as the church don’t get out of our fascination for political leaders and are looking for redemption in anything else other than God, we will definitely be deceived when the real Anti Christ comes.
He will come as a savior to a world in great crisis and he will have the wisdom and ability to solve that crisis for a season.
He will come as a savior to a world in great crisis and he will have the wisdom and ability to solve that crisis for a season.
2) Let us judge ourselves before we judge others
Many in the church are concerned with the Obama’s stand on homosexuality and abortion. They are genuine concerns and have their place. However, do we realize that our present and past condition as a church has played a great part in it? We authorize people in sin and refuse to repent of our mistakes when everything comes to the light.
We’ve allowed lawlessness in the church by preaching on the “Love and Grace of God” without any Fear of the Lord and then we wonder what went wrong? We’ve taught on outward prosperity while missing out on the more important truths on purity before the Lord and Holiness, which is as a result of inward prosperity. Brethern whatever we sow is what we will reap.
We have sown and encouraged lawlessness and it is no wonder we are reaping that. When many in the church were praying for God to bring a more righteous ruler in power, did we realize that it is our own unrighteousness that has been the cause of this moral decline? If we’ve sown poisonous seeds and watered them, and then when the tree is full-grown, and the fruit is about to appear we can’t ask God for an orange fruit or can we?
If we want an orange tree (fruit) in place of the poisonous tree (fruit); we have to cut the tree down to the roots first. Then start by planting orange seeds and watering the plant as it grows.
If we want to see Godly laws established in the land then let us start pray by praying that God would first establish His righteous laws in our hearts.
Brethren let us judge ourselves!
In conclusion let us pray for our president. Let us pray for our own selves that we first start walking in what we want to see in the Land. Let us pray for a clear vision on the times ahead.
